Useful tourist information

Polinya de Xúquer is a peaceful and welcoming town of 2,800 inhabitants in the central part of the Ribera Baixa region of Valencia province. Its culture and history are obvious in the rich heritage that can be found in every town and village in the Ribera Alta and Ribera Baixa regions. Some of them have been declared historic and artistic sites. There are traces of the Metal Age, and some remains of Iberian settlements. The important Xúquer River is the only hydrographic basin in the area. In town, we recommend: a visit to the parish church, built on the remains of a former Moorish mosque; the Molino de Monsalva mill, recently bought by the Ribera Baixa Association of Town Councils for restoration and refurbishment; San Sebastián Shrine, built in 1570 as a gesture of gratitude to the saint for saving the people from the plague; the fish farm, and Mount Muntanyeta del Pins. Our cuisine is based on rice dishes, with every variety of paella, baked rice, rice stew and the traditional fenollà, a noodle paella. Traditional desserts include the arnadí cake and the corona d'ametlló ring cake with almonds. The most important festivals take place in August and on 20 January, when the porrat (stands) fair in honour of San Sebastián is held. Other places of interest in the vicinity are: the Carro (Cart) route, the Agua (Water) route and the Arroz (Rice) route, as well as Cullera, with its extensive beaches, a water park, a castle and the Dragut cave, 10 km away; Alzira, with its attractive old quarter, ramparts and hiking routes along the Sierra de Murta mountain range and through Casella Valley; Simat with Valldigna Monastery; Gandía with its collegiate church, the Ducal palace and extensive beaches; Xátiva, with the Seu Parish Church, an old hospital, the Almudí Museum, the castle and the old quarter; Albufera Nature Reserve; and Valencia city, 38 km away.
